About this almanac
What this almanac covers, what it leaves out, and how its short notes are published.
This almanac covers torch lilies, the garden perennials known as red hot pokers, and the way their leaves, crowns and flower spikes change through the year. It is a plain reference for anyone who grows the plant or sees it in shared planting and wants to know what to look for.
Coverage includes how the plant grows, the seasonal jobs of planting, dividing and tidying, the signs that show healthy growth or trouble, and what the seed heads look like in winter.
What is left out
The almanac does not cover medicinal or herbal uses of plants, chemical sprays or fertiliser mixes, or the buying and sourcing of stock. Those subjects need knowledge beyond a general reference, so they are not part of what this site sets out to explain.
How the notes are published
Each short note shows the date it was published. The notes explain one small practical piece at a time, such as dividing a clump in spring, and they sit alongside the season pages.
